PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT

I,Sandra Silvels, am a servant for humanity.  My Mission Statement is based on my personal strengths and my abilities to practice as a professional social worker.  My strengths are exhortation and communication, which will enhance my ability to be a responsible and dedicated social worker in meeting the needs of the oppressed in The Greater Chattanooga Area.  I also have learned different techniques that give positive feedback and view the strengths of the clients.

As an African American female born during the 50’s, my worldview was limited because of poverty and racism.  Through the lenses of education, I have learned about different populations and diverse cultures.  I feel my worldview is changing. I have begun to understand the NASW Code of Ethics, which promotes social justice and social change with and on behalf of clients. As I continue my education, I am learning how to apply ethics and values of the profession to social work practice with diverse populations.  I am also in the process of understanding the foundation of spirituality.

The area of critical thinking has challenged me on many levels, but I know it will be developed through community experiences, research, and collaboration with other professionals.  This will give me knowledge to enhance my ability to think more creatively  in a professional manner.

My developing practice philosophy is that I will approach the client groups with a non-judgment attitude and a soft pitch voice.  Through several self- assessment activities, I have learned about my biases and fears.  These activities have assisted me in learning how to address my beliefs that could cripple my growth.  An ethical dilemma that might be challenging is related to the core principles from the Code of Ethics “Dignity and Worth of the Person” which can be difficult.  As a professional, I will continue to acknowledge principles before personalities.

My education at UTC has taught me several strategies for developing cultural competence.  I must be aware of my own character and beliefs; learn how to practice an effective intervention plan; continue to seek knowledge through education, and research.

My plans for future learning include joining organizations that value human life’s and continue my education as a MSSW student.  I also plan to attend workshops with the NASW.
